Many years ago I came across a book written by the American sculptor, David Smith. The book was in essence a list all of the influences on his work and to my surprise, they were not earthshaking or profound but rather consisted of mundane minutia like the pattern of leftover fish bones after a meal of cod and the way grass shimmers in the sun after a rain storm. I responded to his observations with a sense of simpatico because I share this same aesthetic, that beauty is pervasive and may be discovered in the most commonplace objects in the most unremarkable of places.
