Only recently returning to the studio, after a ten year break, I have had much time to reflect and remain mindful of some inspiring artists, styles, and techniques of the past; The chiaroscuro effect used by Rembrandt van Rijn, the flickering colorful effects of the Impressionist, the crudeness of Van Gogh, and of course the urban scenes of the Ashcan group. I enjoy painting with oils. Although using light, shadows, reflections, and unlimited colors are important elements to me, smooth Jazz, and sounds from the sixties and seventies are also important as they keep me relaxed and in the zone. In these paintings, I try to evoke the dramatic range of human emotions and moods that exist in “The Inner City”. The viewer will be able to explore evidence of toil and strife, beauty and grace.
